PREFACE

In an open and free society, the role of the press is of crucial importance. A free press acts as a watchdog in society. In Hong Kong, under one country two systems, press freedom is a core value of our separate system. It is a cornerstone of our society and is guaranteed by the Basic Law. It is greatly cherished by our citizens.
But freedom of the press involves onerous responsibilities. Journalists need to be objective, fair and balanced in their work. It is only by discharging its responsibilities fully that a free press can command the respect and support of the public.
This book contains a collection of 36 stories covering a variety of subjects. They are examples of the craft of journalism at its best. They demonstrate how a free and responsible press functions effectively.

They deserve to be read by the public. They also provide useful materials to guide students who are aspiring to be journalists. The journalists concerned and the editors of this work should be congratulated for this excellent publication.
